Blue Tattoo

by

Jenny Milchman*

The street had emptied out and lights from neon signs and streetlights glared against the overhead shop doors, which had at long last been drawn down. Perhaps a bar or two would remain open on this block, but that was it. Claire paused in the middle of the asphalt. The street was choked by cars parked on either side, so she walked in the middle. She could've been strolling down a country lane, but she was in the lower intestines of.........

AKMI

by

Pat McGuinness

As the firing squad pointed their rifles, Akmi thought of Starbucks. He was always cold like a mother-fucker and thought a venti mocha would be nice right now, though he had never had one before. He'd never even had the pleasure to walk into a Starbucks, winner of many awards for environmental design. Such a good place! But the thought of a perfectly roasted, sustainably harvested coffee and sweet chocolate together, served hot by a well-trained but still liberated young barista who could.........

Okay. What happened was I went to buy cigarettes. Took the car, can't walk anywhere from this shithole.
Leave "shithole" out.  Just say "can't walk anywhere from here". Anyway, when I got back, didn't realize he was......

Harold Hollenkamp, 83.

by

Andrew Jasperson

The bolt securing the starter to the frame had rusted solid. Nothing to be done but spray some WD-40 on it and drink a Coors while the grease did the work. Harold shimmied his 1937 model frame out from under the truck. After eighty-three years he'd held up remarkably well. Not a hunch to him. Most men shrivel as they age. Their bones, that is, the skin just loosens. But Harold just got older, maintaining his six feet of height the entire time. The hair had long since retreated from most of his scalp though. Harold gathered.......

After School

by

Lindsay Holst

Here is the tree, and here we all are.
Jo March, my favorite, is talking a lot, like always. She's sitting up in the high v-shaped branch, because she's brave. She is saying how she'd much rather be fighting alongside her father, who is a chaplain in the Civil War, which started in 1861 and pitted brother against brother. The soldiers ate hardtack, which is like a big Saltine cracker, but very hard, and usually full of bugs because there were no preservatives in food back then. But she can't go fight, because she is a woman, and later on she'll have to cut her hair and sell it so that her family can.........

Without

by

She stood in the exit queue behind her husband and in-laws following an uninteresting and inconsequential match at the All England Tennis Club on a warm day in late June. The two extra tickets were a surprise from her husband's parents, who cheerfully greeted them early that morning at Heathrow, following the overnight, nine-hour flight from Atlanta. Anna managed to muster just enough enthusiasm about the tickets. Max and his parents loved tennis, she pretended.........

A Good Look at Dead Jimmy

by

Joe Hartlaub*

There's nothing like the sight of a dead body, Doug Woolfolk thought, to make you want to hit the reset button.

Little things make a difference. Order dinner delivered to your hotel room, instead of venturing out, even if it's your first night in New Orleans after driving all day from Ohio. Walk out of your hotel and turn left instead of right. Eat dinner at the fourth place you see instead of the third, the one with the "Help Wanted" and "Cash Only" signs on the door. Don't flirt with your waitress, even if she flirts with you first. And if you do flirt with your waitress, don't ask her out for a drink when her shift is over, not even if her body........"

MISSING

"They were in the middle of an argument when Don got rid of the bird. Not one of those long, slow-burning disagreements, this one was the real thing: loud voices, screaming, the threat that at any moment one of them might spill over the line and let the whole thing become physical. Later, it occurred to Lara that perhaps she should have become physical with Don; she would have lost, but at least she wouldn't have to spend all this time thinking back on......"

" The wheels on the folding cot skid as Richard scoots it along in search of the apartment number. When the cot tilts in the pebbly street, he scrambles to set it upright and the wire frame slices his thumb, drawing blood. He sucks the cut. Then he swipes at a line of sweat trickling down his sunburned nose. He'd heard that people with blue eyes suffer the most from sun glare. Not so! His eyes are a muddy tan but his head feels hollowed out like a Halloween pumpkin. Cupping his hands to shade his eyes, he spots 214....."

I remembered my daughter's words as if it were yesterday. She had held out her trembling hand to show me a diamond ring that dwarfed her small finger. Her sweet face radiated light as if it came from inside her. She looked the spitting image of her mother, God rest her soul.

Honey, are you sure about this........""
