HERB & DOROTHY

Elderly Couple at Bus Stop, Miami Beach FL 2005 from South Beach Sampler

“Thank God they were greedy”, Lynda Benglis.

In the 1960’s , a librarian and her husband , a postal worker began collecting art on a very modest budget.

I wish there were many more of them, but their story has been told in a movie – “Herb & Dorothy”.

SPEED DIAL

Wires and Clouds, New Orleans LA 2004 from Wired Sky
All reproduction rights reserved Wm. Greiner

The world is a shrinking and everyone is on speed dial or one click away!

Yesterday , in the newspaper, appeared an Afghanistan war photograph by AP photographer David Guttenfelder. It was an amazing picture of two American soldiers firing a mortar from what looked like a courtyard at dusk. The photograph struck me in so many ways, and it was strangely beautiful, poetic. I felt bad for looking at this picture and having these thoughts? It’s a war! American soldiers are risking their lives, dying for a cause.

I did a quick search and found an email address for David. I sent off a short note and in less than six hours, he had replied thanking me for some kind words.

The world is shrinking and I wish we could all get along.

A Lack of Character

The (Mayor) “Ray Nagin Coloring Book” is now available! It’s no surprise that the Mayor of “chocolate city” has now been turned into a cartoon character in this new coloring book, produced by illustrator Karen Ocker.

By using humor, Ocker hopes to get people to think about the last 8 years C. Ray Nagin governed the city of New Orleans and what the future might hold for us without Mayor Nagin.

The Reposed book cover
All reproduction rights reserved Wm. Greiner

This month marks the 10th anniversary of the LSU Press publication,

The Reposed.

Inspired by the great New Orleans surrealist photographer, Clarence John Laughlin, I set out to make compelling , relevant pictures of a well worn and clichéd subject – Southern Louisiana cemeteries.

The monograph comprises 62 color plates , with a foreword by the brilliant short story writer Thomas Lynch and an essay by Steven Maklansky.

A limited number of signed copies available.

Mayor C. Ray Nagin, his wife and four New Orleans officials , in June, took a trip to China and Australia at a cost of $28,770. At the time, C. Ray stated that the trip would be sponsored by an unnamed benefactor. Demands that the sponsor be made public forced the Mayor to change direction , saying the city would pick up the tab!

On Friday, C. Ray left New Orleans on another trip, this time to Cuba!
With no sponsor, the city and it's tax payers will also pick up this tab!

We had been together for a long time, I took her familiar for granted.

Things would always be as they ever were.

Interrupted by Katrina , displaced by her and not to return would be a shock.

Visiting now, going back to what was so familiar is no more.

Who are these people? Where did they come from and do they realize what

happened? To not know or not have experienced “it” must be a help?

For me , like an ex-wife or lover, she looks familiar but time has changed her and me.

And neither of us will ever be the same.

POWER WASH

Power Washer, Baton Rouge LA 2009

The deadline has passed for the state to apply for $300 million of Federal stimulus money to build a high speed rail line between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

The rail has had wide support in both communities , among business people and politicians.

An application would seem to have been a no brainer. However, the governor has repeatedly stated that even if the rail were built, Louisiana cannot afford the $18 million annual maintenance and upkeep.

SOME ACCIDENTS ARE BEAUTIFUL

Light Leak, Baton Rouge La 2009
All reproduction rights reserved Wm. Greiner

Some accidents can be beautiful but most are not!

My old friend Billy Schell , drummer for the NOLA band Boondoggles , just posted a very sad story about his mailman of over twenty years.

"As you may or may not know, Roy Rondeno was in a terrible accident on Saturday. While sorting the mail from the back of his van Roy was hit by another car. His legs were crushed. I am so thankful that he survived this terrible accident but after hearing Roy's story you will understand why he and his family are going to need a lot of help in the upcoming months and years. Roy was my neighborhood mailman. He is also a friend.I met Roy about 20 years ago when he was delivering the mail to my home. He is a fantastic person. We always talked sports...the status of our New Orlean's Saints, in particular! We discussed the upcoming year and whether or not it could be "THE SEASON" to reach the Super Bowl, both of us consistently filled with high hopes! About 5 years ago, I moved to a home just outside of Roy’s route. I would see him occasionally and would honk and wave. He would always flash that big smile that would brighten my day! I'm so grateful that Roy is alive and I have decided to start a small contribution fund for him and his recovery. My family and I want to see Roy's smile again very soon. Please click on this link to read Roy's story. http://www.wwltv.com/topstories/stories/wwl092909cbmailbag.1cbe5faae.html This is the perfect opportunity for all of us to give back to a great person. (A person that has given so much to me as well as everyone that he crosses paths with on a daily basis.)I have decided to donate $10 for every Nola Shirt and $5 for every Nola Hat sold through the end of the year to Roy!"
