GOD BLESS(ED) BILL Eggleston

Bill at The Embassy , Santa Monica CA 1999

I was first introduced to William Eggleston's photographs in 1979, only three years after his landmark exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. I was introduced to him not soon after this time. It was awkward and strange , that first meeting. We stood around the dining room table on Central Avenue in Memphis. Bill talked about music and played a few albums. We would meet a number of times over the ensuing years, sharing a meal, an afternoon , a look at some pictures or an exhibition. Bill was not widely celebrated,  or collected for that matter , in those days. However, over the last almost 30 years, his star has risen high! Its nice to see all the attention he is getting now with the sweeping retrospective which just opened at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Bill Eggleston is blessed , and we are blessed to have William Eggleston!

Wow. Not only do I just discover your blog, but also this photo you took of Eggleston. This is one of my favorites of him. He looks relaxed, outside of his typical suit. Fantastic!
