Hurricanes not affecting travel plans

Good news for the Louisiana tourism industry: 36% of U.S. travelers say they plan to visit a hurricane-susceptible destination this year. The survey, by TripAdvisor, also shows that 43% of the people who are planning to go to an area threatened by hurricanes say they are not concerned about the storms.

It is with great sadness I note the loss of my dear friend , Elemore Morgan Jr. (1931-2008). Elemore was Louisiana’s greatest contemporary landscape painter. He was also one of the kindest , most soft spoken and talented people I had the honor of knowing. Elemore , you will be missed by many , including me!

HEARD A HOMELESS SPUN JOKE TODAY.............

Yesterday in a speech to the American Association for Public Opinion Research, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin cracked that the best way to deal with the homeless problem was to “find some bus tickets. We’ll see, one way.”

What kind of solution is this? Homelessness is a very serious issue that needs to be addressed. It is a catastrophe that 12,000 people are living on the streets of New Orleans. The problem has only gotten worse during the Nagin administration.

Remember in the immediate aftermath of Katrina, Nagin called on people to return to New Orleans, even though the housing stock was not restored. Certainly Nagin contributed to the problem the city is facing today.

His lack of leadership on the issue has been apparent. For months, Nagin has promised to address the growing homeless population encamped at the intersection of Canal and Claiborne Avenues; however, he has failed to take effective action. The homeless problem cannot be solved with one-way tickets out of town, but it does need to be addressed.

The New Orleans police department ranks have been decimated as a result of hurricane Katrina and they are having trouble getting staffed up! Thankfully , the Louisiana National Guard , specifically 300 troops, have had a presence in New Orleans since the storm , backing up the police. The guard has been a huge help in making New Orleans a safer place. The problem is that the Guard is due to pull out in June. Here is what you can do:
