DESTRUCTIVE CONSTRUCTION

Miami Development Billboard , Miami FL 2003
All reproduction rights reserved Wm. Greiner

There is absolutely no reason to abandon Charity Hospital in New Orleans to build a new one in another location and in so doing , spend an additional $400 million and displace hundreds of New Orleans residents!

The Preservation Resource Center is urging people to attend, or send a representative to, the City Planning Committee "forum" this Thursday, May 28, at 4 pm on alternatives for the proposed medical district.

If you cannot, you are encouraged to submit comments in advance of the meeting to Ms. Yolanda Rodriguez, Director, City Planning, at ywrodriquez@cityofno.com.

MEMORIAL DAY*

The Flag Pole during Jazzfest, New Orleans LA 2005

We are here, able to enjoy this day because so many have sacrificed so much for us.

Let us never forget!

*Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 25 in 2009). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the civil war), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.

Stormy*

Stormy Weather at Sea , Caribbean 2007 from the series CRUISE
All reproduction rights reserved Wm. Greiner

Porn star Stormy Daniels, a 30 year old Baton Rouge native, has announced she has formed an "exploratory committee" to gauge public interest in her run for the U.S. Senate , against incumbent R- Senator David Vitter.  Vitter is up for re-election next year and  the senator may be vulnerable for re-election , after it was disclosed that the senator's telephone number was found in the client list of a high priced prostitution ring.

Daniels' campaign is mainly the creation of a New Orleans college student, whom I presume is interested in embarrassing Senator Vitter?

And although all of this is highly amusing , it ultimately will not serve the State of Louisiana or it's citizens well! We have experienced enough stormy weather!

However you may feel about welfare for the rich (i.e. the State of Louisiana subsidizing the New Orleans Saints football team), the fact is the city would not have been awarded the hosting of 9 prior Super Bowls without them in New Orleans!

It was announced yesterday , that New Orleans will be the host to #10 in 2013. The economic impact is estimated at $300 million for the city.

So if you multiple that estimate by 10, I think this welfare may have paid off?

PAPER CUT

Putney Bridge Bookstore, London 2006 from UKOK series

Louisiana State government is trying for across the board budget cuts which will have a dramatic impact on Louisiana State University. School officials are threatening to shut down LSU Press as a result. This institution which has published so many great titles including, "A Confederacy of Dunces" could be gone soon!

Paper cuts hurt!

C. Ray Nagin’s blur is made clear by Clancy DuBos. DuBos , a New Orleans Gambit magazine columnist and WWL-TV political analyst , takes the gloves off in this scathing report on where New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin disappeared to 81 days after hurricane Katrina hit.

I am not going to even try paraphrasing this well written piece , so here is the link:

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers , the people responsible for building, maintaining and improving the levee system which protects New Orleans , it has been reported spent $5,200,000 on public relations , aka PR! The purpose of which was to change public perception of the job the Corp is doing!

I think the best PR they could ask for is to build levees which do what they are suppose to do! Protect the city!

New Orleans Recovery Director , Dr. Edward Blakely , it has been reported is stepping down from his position in less than a month. Blakely started his six figure salaried job in January of 2007, promising that "cranes in the skyline" by September of that year. This did not happen, but Blakely did manage to anger many residents, calling some “buffoons” and referring to New Orleans as a “third world nation”.

CASTLES MADE OF SAND*

Gustav, Ike retired as hurricane names

The names of the two hurricanes that affected Louisiana in 2008 have been retired by the World Meteorological Organization. The organization’s hurricane committee retired Gustav and Ike from the official name rotation; those names were scheduled to be used again in 2014. In their place will be Gonzalo and Isaias. Gustav made landfall near Cocodrie on Sept. 1 as a Category 2 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. The hurricane caused more than $4 billion in damage to Louisiana; it plunged parts of the Capital Region into darkness for several weeks. Gustav killed 112 people, including 77 in Haiti. Ike made landfall at Galveston, Texas on Sept. 13 as a Category 2 storm. It killed more than 80 people across the Caribbean and Bahamas, and another 20 in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. The total estimated U.S. property damage from Ike is estimated at $19.3 billion.**

*"Castles Made of Sand" is a song by the Jimi Hendrix Experience and featured on their  second studio album, Axis: Bold As Love, released in 1967 in the UK and 1968 in the U.S.

Climatologists are proving to be poor predictors of what a hurricane season will bring us! In fact, if they were stock market analysts , they would probably be fired!
