Function was valued more than form , concerning cars and trucks, when I was growing up!

REMEMBERING JORDAN

Jordan Gautreau, Baton Rouge LA 1997 from the series Perilous Pilgrimage
All reproduction rights reserved Wm. Greiner

I was working on the series , Perilous Pilgrimage , when I made this image of my nephew, Jordan Gautreau in 1997. The idea for the work was that growing up was fraught with risk and that over time, children took on more adult like mannerisms.

Tragically, Jordan was killed , at the age of 22 this past November, in a freak automobile accident. He had made it through that Perilous Pilgrimage, only to be taken prematurely as a young adult.

I have always loved , and appreciated, the way photography stops time and leaves indelible images for us to always remember.

Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There Is a Season) *

Parking Lot, Baton Rouge LA 2010
All reproduction rights reserved Wm. Greiner

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time to love, a time to hate
A time of peace, I swear it's not too late!

In South Louisiana, the climate seems to vacillate between Summer and Winter, Winter and Summer, which proves to be confusing to the trees.

Get up you're asleep at the wheel

Car in Traffic, London UK 2010 from the series UKOK
All reproduction rights reserved Wm. Greiner

24-7 Truck Stop Plaza
Turn off headlights turn on hazards
3 A.M. is when I gazed
Eyes glazed I'm dazed and then I fade
To black now were back
'On The Road' like Kerouac
Down the turnpike high rate of speed
Up all night like Gilbert Gottfried
You got your Jesus on the dashbord but the devil's under my hood
You're taking it down legal I'm pullin' it up to no good
God is your co-pilot I let Satan ride shotgun
You pay a toll to get to heaven but on the road to hell there's none
Get up you're asleep at the wheel
Get up you're asleep at the wheel
Get up you're asleep at the wheel *

Capital Road, Baton Rouge LA 2010 from the series BEING BATON ROUGE

I almost deleted the email I received this morning with no subject line, from an address I did not recognize. Fortunately, I opened it and turned out to be from a fairly well known writer, working for a famous publication, enquiring about featuring my work about cars!

This evening, I opened an email from a museum director telling me he was planning a show around my work, featuring me AND the two major William(s) of the medium!

All we need's a fast machine

Mardi Gras Car, Baton Rouge LA 2010 from the series AUTOMATIC

We got rockstars in the Whitehouse
All our popstars look like porn
All my heroes hit the highway
They don't hang out here no more
You can tell me on my cellphone
You can page me all night long
But you won't catch this freebird
I'll already be long gone
Like Steve McQueen
All we need's a fast machine
And we're gonna make it all right*

A Choice of Weapons*

Nikon camera, circa early 1980's

In the Summer of 1982, I was living in the small town of Ville France sur Mer.

I had enrolled in a month long French immersion course, while waiting for the Tour

De France to start. This was my second year to cover the Tour.

The place I shared with two Europeans had been broken into about a week before the tour and all of my equipment was stolen. We filed a police report, but I knew it was gone forever.

It was interesting replacing a whole photojournalist Nikon kit in the South of France. I found replacement cameras and this Nikon was one of them. The 1982 Tour was one of it’s last used as a journalist tool. Subsequently, it’s gotten plenty of use doing all my other work. Unfortunately, the camera has been used , abused and may be near the end of life!

It was my weapon of choice and I now don’t know what to replace it with……..
